In this video I decide to go against the grain here and flush the transmission fluid in my 1995 GMC Suburban. The truck is 24 years old and has roughly 78,000 original miles on it. I've had no issues with the transmission so far but want to keep up with the maintenance and keep this thing running and shifting good. So, out with the old and in with the new! I guess time will tell if this is indeed a bad thing to do on a tranny this old.

Wix Transmission Filter:

HINT: I bought the Valvoline MAXLife Synthetic ATF at Walmart for just $17 per gallon!! Cheapest by far anywhere!!!

Any time you see a vehicle he is ''working on'' it's parked in his driveway. Does that look like the grand master mechanic that he pretends to be to you. He does not have a working garage but he pretends to be this great mechanic. He is full of BS. Yes he knows a lot about cars but I'm guessing he has not had a real business for years. He just pretends too. He basically said as much when he said that he made a living with his Youtube money and amazon sales. NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. He pretends to be some master mechanic but does not even have a working garage. FRAUD. And I don't watch him . I'll leave that up to his fanboys. And if you ARE a real MECHANIC you will catch him in mistakes that he yells out. I'm guessing that his followers are not that knowledgeable. I'll also guess that no pro mechanics watch him unless it's to get a laugh. I own a real working shop BTW.

Drive it up a hill and back down going slow and just a quick little braking, I mean hit the brake pedal and let off ,it should downshift . Go back to the garage and change the oil and filter again with a high quality oil and filter and your transmission is better than new,and I mean it. Do that at 75 to85 thousand miles. My pickup is a pleasure to drive,it shifts and downshifts just like it would be done by a person, with a hard pull or a heavy load or empty. Better than the original when the truck was new. It blows me away how good it works €:>)

John Dossey 4 месяца назад I ABSOLUTELY AGREE, for example when he shows the metal in the old filter, I considered that the filter WAS doing its job. I have seen many screw-ups by kids working at quick oil change shops doing real damage at this. I currently am driving a 21 year old Buick LeSabre with over 100,000 mils and the HORRIBLE :-) original fluid in it and it shifts and works perfectly. This transmission fluid change is like the air filter scam, or the NITROGEN tire inflation stuff. I know you cant hear me but I am SCREAMING just like he did, but I am saying "IF IT ISNT BROKE, dont touch that transmission".

  • Travis Shader
Travis Shader 3 месяца назад John Dossey This is definitely true, especially on a good GM tranny, they last year's and don't beg for that much attention if taken care of, it doesn't always require even so much as a complete fluid change, I've seen 200-300,000 miles on them and 20-25 years and shift almost perfectly and as if not better than new, I'd recommend checking and adding some. And if it's the "un-checkable" style with only a hidden fill plug, There is a screw to check and I usually just drain a bit if it's full and add approx 2qts after about 125-200K miles, at least that's what I've done to all of them and they all now have well over 175-255k or close to it and they shift amazingly smooth without any issues in the Buicks and all, I've worked with many, but I DO NOT recommend a flush and n them nor would I say they even need anything else unless a rubber seal leaks in which case I still just try to replace the seal without disturbing anything as much as possible by all means, and they will continue to be the way they were, I'd say Oil change and fills of any obvious fluids do best for them.
  • Travis Shader
Travis Shader 3 месяца назад I meant to say Oil change with(Engine obviously) and any other fluids just to be filled and maybe something good for coolant and oil coolant for corrosion issues and oil for loss of pressure is(usually higher viscosity. • MarcasswellbMD
MarcasswellbMD 3 месяца назад (изменено) @John Dossey times were different with that Buick Trans and When that Trans fluid was made.. CVT fluid is not even thick it poors out like water, thats probably why they don't last very long and have issues.. Most of Todays Transitions need there fluid drained and filled from 35 thousand to 75,000 miles depending on the make.. But the dealer will tell us it's for life! Life only being 100,000 Miles and if you get to 150,000 miles you are doing real good, But I notice that the people who don't have issues with newer cars Do the Necessary maintenance, And most importantly keep Fresh fluids in there Vehicles constantly, It's not that much money to flush your trans every 35,000 like a hundred but worth it if you plan on keeping the car...

  • Stix
Stix 2 месяца назад @John Dossey Nitro in Tires - runs cooler - blow out is less likely. Tranny - Change the Fluid out after 100K it is not difficult change it once and run it 1K, then change it if you want to clean everything out. I have done my cars and it works fine and they do shift better. You say yours shifts and runs perfectly - but how many others can you compare yours to ? Air filters do make a difference (the car does not starve for Air) just like PCV valves, and Oil filters. Just those 3 things can make 1 MPG of difference - which tells you the engine is running better.

Stephen Cannon 2 месяца назад The flushing out of the old fluid he says when you see bubbles shut the engine down immediately.......I recommend an assistant for this step. By the time you see the bubbles, get around back to the interior and turn off the key that could be the difference between transmissions being totally starved of fluid and.....damage already done.... You didn’t say what the bolts you torqued inside the transmission housing. Good tip about the magnet. With some modern day “Sealed for life” transmissions the filter is embedded in the transmission case.......yes you Ford. Even with flush most people would probably not think about removing the pan to check the magnet. My 03 Durango did not have a drain plug. You had to loosen the bolts and drain fluid one corner at a time. Had a fill Tube but no drain plug. Fast Forward to my 2011 Mercedes E350 has a drain plug but not fill tube. You have to force feed the new fluid from the lower side. 1 Road: I am not sure what part of the country you are in but they have lab service in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I used it for a coupe of oil samples but I would suspect they could analyze other fluids. They ship you the kit which is basically the same concept as Blood draws for lab work. Take a sample of the old fluid during draining and send the sample to them. A few days later they should be able to tell any excessive levels of one material, overall condition and possibly early heads up for possible future problems fluid wise. Google Blackstone labs.

  • Chris B
Chris B Неделю назад I hope to only say this on the subject of not touching fluids if "it isnt broke": if it isn't broke, it still doesn't need ignored. Nearly all vehicles have a maintenance schedule in the owners manual. Some recommend oil changes every 3,000 miles and some at 5,000 miles. Change the air filter every so many miles, rotate the tires every so many miles, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, checking belt(s), etc. Following this schedule is the recommended schedule suggested by the engineers of the vehicle. We can all say we had a vehicle last X long without something being done but also know someone who wasn't as lucky. Some people love beyond 90 years old, some have a heart attack and die at 30. One car may last 20 years while another gives out at 7. Follow the schedule in your book and good luck.

splash 6 месяцев назад (изменено) @Killer2600 Flushing requires a machine, which pressurises new fluid into the trans, and retrieving the old... which could cause particles to get stuck in valves and other small orifices... The is fluid replacement.
  • Killer2600
Killer2600 6 месяцев назад @splash You need to look up the definition of flush. You don't need a flushing machine to accomplish the act of flushing out the fluid. You can flush the brake system as well and you don't need a flushing machine to do it either.
  • splash
splash 6 месяцев назад @Killer2600 And by flushing brake system, you are using hydraulic pressure from the system, or a pump, the flush the brake fluid. Sorry bud, but this is not a trans "flush". Regardless of how you think you could word it!
  • Killer2600
Killer2600 6 месяцев назад @splash Indeed the fluid is being pushed out of the system during a flush, you did see the fluid being pumped out of the system in the video did you not. If you missed it go back and watch again. Like I said, you don't need to hook up a machine called a "flush machine" to flush out fluid.
  • splash

osos231 6 месяцев назад @splash it is a flush. By definition, you don't need a specialized machine. Old fluid out through clear hose, new fluid out through clear hose
  • splash
splash 6 месяцев назад @osos231 To each their own! Its not a true flush, because you are only replacing fluid. I would not charge a customer for a transmission "flush", and then do this procedure. I would simply charge for filter, gasket, and any fluid replaced. I guess you would need to know what a trans flush is before confusing the two...
  • osos231
osos231 6 месяцев назад (изменено) @splash you indeed have to know simply what flush means. Old fluid out,new in, whether done with the machine or trans pump. Will you get 100% of the fluid out? No. I dont even think the machine even gets all of the old fluid out. Most of it close to a %100 but not %100. Remember, most shops probably want you to believe that you must use their expensive transmission flush machine 😉 In a good number of cases, it's a money thing. To each their own. 😉

steven schulz 6 месяцев назад A flush is done with a machine... itll run a detergent through the fucking thing and get shit out of the torque converter then replace the fluid. • splash
splash 6 месяцев назад (изменено) @osos231 yes, to each their own. Replacing fluid, to me, doesn't mean flush... just cause you tie into the syatem and allow the pump to spew fluid out, isnt really a flush... the flush process requires cleaners that are injected through the machine and trans, removing buildup. But maybe we could call it a "DIY FLUSH"😉 I dont even reccomend a flush(machine) on older vehicles, cause they could cause parricles to become lodged in valves and passages, leading to trans failure.
  • splash

  • Bondo
Bondo 6 месяцев назад (изменено) @Killer2600 that is not a flush. A flush uses external devices that create their own pressure to replace fluid. That's the bad one. So many people confuse the two so you are forgiven

Jason Roed 6 месяцев назад He definitely flushed the transmission and then changed the filter. That is exactly how I do flushes at my shop (without the filter change). I hook into the cooler lines at the same point on the radiator except I attach fitting to the radiator and the cooler line and then those are hooked to hoses on a machine. The only difference is that he caught the fluid into a catch pan and I use the machine to catch the fluid. The machine doesn't pressurize the fluid before going into the transmission. It uses the pressure created by the transmission pump to do all the work. I agree the title is misleading.

  • Jeff Riley
Jeff Riley 6 месяцев назад This is considered a flush. I rebuilt Transmissions for a l living for many years when I was young. Credit for what was done by channel operator for trying to help people. However can get more complicated to explain all possible ways to get the most fluid replacement. I do not like the external devises as I have seen them actually do damage to converter clutch seal on the input shaft. Basic things to do differently. 1. Drop the pan first. A little trick after all cleaned up is to reverse dimple the pan holes using two ball peen hammers and slightly tap smaller Hammer with larger as holes have tendency when originally tightened to dimple towards case. 2. Then refill pan with about the 5 or so qts. Depending on pan size and depth. They make a fitting you can connect Instead of screwing plastic hose into radiator. Next part takes 2 people. 3. In park and e brake on. One person starts car while second person pours fluid constantly in fill. The fluid from converter goes to cooler and into jug or pan or bucket of your choice. Clean fluid in pan refills converter. Not a 100% accurate flush and we would over flush with new fluid to get as much as reasonable. Now keep in mind that some converters had/ or have drain plugs. That can be drained eliminating most of this process. That would only necessitate cooler lines and cooler needing flushing or some would blow out with air, needing multiple lines disconnected. If you don't have full understanding be careful or pay someone that does. Good luck.

Immastandpat 6 месяцев назад (изменено) @regarding "flush": Whether or not it's a "flush"by industry standards is one thing. The real issue here is what is meant by the guy who made the video. He clearly referred to what he did as a "flush", which was the basis of the op's question.

  • Spurious Effect
Spurious Effect 5 месяцев назад (изменено) You should never do it the way this guy is showing. You empty your pan when you change the filter. Then refill what you took out of the pan. This is called a fluid and filter change. To completely flush your system, you then need to disconnect the line at your oil cooler, then pump out one quart at a time by starting the car and putting the transmission in neutral until one quart comes out. Then shut off the engine and add in a new quart in the check/fill tube. Repeat until all the old fluid is flushed out. This way you will never allow air into your system. Always add exactly the amount you remove. Do not simply buy the amount listed as your capacity. Have a few extra quarts on hand. It's easy. Always do this yourself. Never have it done by machine.

  • Terry Melvin
Terry Melvin 5 месяцев назад (изменено) @splash indeed, some machines actually reverse-flush the transmission..a very bad idea because whatever particles that were sitting on the bottom of the pan end up going places where they shouldn't= bad shifting or slipping or worse. Also, if the tranny has really high miles it's best to leave the old fluid in especially if it's showing signs of dying. It will go farther as-is.. New fluid will cause slippage.
  • Richard Freytag
Richard Freytag 5 месяцев назад @splash so 300 pounds of trans pump pressure is a different kind of pressure than a flush machine?
  • splash
splash 5 месяцев назад (изменено) @Richard Freytag Listen bud, your just opening the system and letting the fluid pump out, rather than go through the entire system...theoretically causing a leak in the system. Andrew Cran 4 месяца назад @Killer2600 You're just plain wrong here. A trans flush does involve a specialist machine, it forces almost all of the old fluid out of places like valve bodies and, critically, the torque converter. Just because he is using the vehicle to pump the old fluid out, does not make the activity a 'flush'. See the comments farther down from professionals.
  • Andrew Cran
Andrew Cran 4 месяца назад @Killer2600 your brakes don't have valve bodies and a huge torque converter where fluid sits. You're trying to create a false equivalence between flushing brake lines and flushing a transmission. They're two very different things. Just because the same word is used, doesn't mean you can assume the two processes are the same...
  • Killer2600
Killer2600 4 месяца назад @Andrew Cran So a brake flush, coolant flush, or toilet flush doesn't force out the old fluid? So it just stays there right? Because it hasn't been forced out with an external expensive machine. All you die-hards keep trying to say I'm wrong but you all still haven't picked up a dictionary. Dictionary says I'm right which makes all of you wrong.

  • J Alenichev
J Alenichev 2 дня назад @Richard Freytag Yes many flush machines actually have a reverse flush cycle which sends the fluid in the opposite direction, sounds crazy but the original idea is that by doing that you would loosten/dislodge any material that was still stuck on any surface but in reality the reverse cycle many times just sends particles that had settled at the bottom back up through the entire system where they would get lodged in areas they could do damage and sure enough, a lot of people have had just such issues after an actual pressured flush machine that uses the reverse cycle so yes it's a different kind of pressure since the trans pump only sends the fluid in one direction.
