objective

An old excavator broke down 16 years ago and was abandoned in the middle of a trail on a steep slope in my neighbors forest.
My neighbor wanted it out of the way so he can use the trail again, he said I can have the excavator for scrap metal so I went to investigate.

  • Liam
Liam 2 дні тому @Eric Hansen Best way to learn is to get out and do it, it can be frustrating but fun and rewarding. Problem is most people live in the city/suburbs these days, so unless its a persons trade its not in their skillset. People who live in rural areas like this usually have at least basic mechanical knowledge, its almost "common sense". Majority of us service and fix our own cars, motorbikes, tractors etc. usually taught by dads who were taught by their dads and so on. Driving it an hour to a shop to get your oil changed simply isnt practical. Really the hardest part of fixing shit is finding the problem, in this case tracing that wire and finding that missing nut. As tedious as it can be, fixing the problems is usually straightforward, especially with old and fundamentally simple mechanical machines with limited electronics. Not trying to downplay this guys talent, id say he does this as a trade or passionate hobby, and he knows exactly what he is doing and knows his way around the machine better than most skilled DIYers

  • fellenXD
fellenXD 1 місяць тому @Eric jones I also hate powerful and efficient engines. Like, who would want an engine that utilizes it's fuel to the max when you could get an underpowered, inefficient gas-guzzler.
  • Eric jones
Eric jones 1 місяць тому @fellenXD You do know the epa is behind all of this. Your not getting a lot more efficiency. Look uo carb vs fuel injector efficiency. A bad sensor can destroy yor car. Powerful? how so?
  • Eric jones
Eric jones 1 місяць тому @snorman1911 thats right. want them to bring back carbs and a no sensor car. 2 stroke car! even better.
  • fellenXD
fellenXD 1 місяць тому @Eric jones Well, i don't live in the US so i don't have to worry about the epa. Also if you aren't completely retarded you should be able to look up a simple datasheet and see that modern engines are way more efficient than old ones. To all the kindergarteners out there, that means it uses less fuel to make the same amount of power, or even more power. Although the downside is that repairs require knowledge about computers, which makes all the boomers scared, who insists that inefficient carbs are superior, because they are afraid of being replaced by computers, even though computers are way better att setting up and controlling engines.
  • snorman1911
snorman1911 1 місяць тому @fellenXD The reality is that most practical gains were had a decade ago, everything now is high tech hacks to meet EPA regs. Many reliability issues with cars now are due to this.
  • fellenXD

  • fellenXD
fellenXD 1 місяць тому @snorman1911 Of course! 10 years ago when everyone were running carbies!
  • snorman1911
snorman1911 1 місяць тому @fellenXD maybe you missed my other post - tech is great, but all work now is put into meeting EPA regs at the cost of power, driveability, and reliability. Like trucks with small turbo engines. It's not the ideal power plant.
  • fellenXD
fellenXD 1 місяць тому @snorman1911 Engines are getting too environmentally friendly, you mean? Small supercharged engines are getting better than the big gas-guzzlers we all love and know. Maybe it's time to realize that engines are better than ever before, at the cost of being harder to service by people who don't understand computers. It's sad but some people are stuck in the past and refuse to change, even though improvement are right in front of them. That's why i can't wait for all the old cunts to die, so we finally can build a better society.
  • snorman1911
snorman1911 1 місяць тому @fellenXD Computers don't really make engines harder to work on. I work on cars. The new emissions stuff is hell on engines. Turbos won't last as long as a NA big block engine (look it up). Direct injection causes buildup in the valves (look up walnut blasting). 9 speed transmissions are more faulty and shifting strategies are aimed more for fuel economy at the expense of performance. Look up ZF transmission failures. I could go on and on.

High compression engines and high octane fuel worked quite well before Jimmy Carter and his band of Greenpeace slide rulers. Additionally, these cars will be still be running strong long after your microchipped toasters and EPA compliant light switches have been ground up along with Bernie's soylent green processed food rations.

no candy 4 тижні тому The new chevy gdi engines with vvt are awesome. No exhaust recirculation, better power more mpg, can burn regular threw 104 octane race fuel, because its got really high compression. Next big thing will be compression fired gas engines. Couple companies are working on it. They are something like 20:1.
  • Walker Forsyth
Walker Forsyth 4 тижні тому (змінено) @fellenXD that's definitely not the case here in the United States when it comes to diesel engines, horsepower, fuel economy and reliability peaked roughly just over 20 years ago, it's been steadily going to shit ever since.
  • P2
P2 3 тижні тому (змінено) @fellenXD " I also hate powerful and efficient engines. " You're not really saying anything here, because you're just inverting the virtue. Even if you were right about small turbo charged engines being efficient, it would still be the case that his statment was also a virtue. " Well, i don't live in the US so i don't have to worry about the epa. Also if you aren't completely retarded you should be able to look up a simple datasheet and see that modern engines are way more efficient than old ones. " Then you should know about how PSA Group(VolksWagan et al) Hacked the datasheets to make the units seem more efficient than they were, placing doubt on your claim. " Although the downside is that repairs require knowledge about computers, which makes all the boomers scared, who insists that inefficient carbs are superior, because they are afraid of being replaced by computers, even though computers are way better att setting up and controlling engines. " It has nothing to do with '' knowledge about computers '' at all . The reason it's a problem is because they use proprietory drivers that prevent competitive economic superstructures/eco-systems from existing. Mechanics who are up to date in engine technical diagnostics and fault analyitics, can not get into these systems. In turn this means that service life of the vehicle goes down and new incentives to get vehicles that don't have this dillema are created. " because they are afraid of being replaced by computers, even though computers are way better att setting up and controlling engines. " The computer systems would be easier to repair if they worked like they possibly could, ecept they don't because we have peverse incentives in the economic structures. " Of course! 10 years ago when everyone were running carbies! " most vehicles 10yrs ago were already fuel injected and computer controlled. That was 2009 not the 80's. " It's sad but some people are stuck in the past and refuse to change, even though improvement are right in front of them. _That's why i can't wait for all the old cunts to die, so we finally can build a better society. _ " I wrote this somewhere else, but; The problem here starts with the conception of power that you're using. In order for 'progess' to to be considered universally good you have to assume an end of history. However it's possible to just reach conclusions that are functional, then look back and declare that the new thing was destined. We can't argue about whether the past will be vindicated, only the future will, but that doesn't contain any inherant direction. The people who commonly use these terms are also backward looking, they're not looking forward and going into the future, instead they're looking backwards and moving away from things that they wished no longer exist. The only '' kindergarten '' here is you , a mental midget who thinks it's a good idea to move forward without wisdom.

  • Mike lewellen
Mike lewellen 1 місяць тому @Zombie ZH himer if a person enjoys paperwork it's not that difficult in Missouri. Just a matter of actually knowing which forms, what agencies and how to properly word things. Had an ex boss in recovery who employed someone because he dreaded how time consuming it was, at the end of the day all of the nearly free stuff was worth it.

  • Rick Hughes
Rick Hughes 1 місяць тому @Zombie ZH himer it is not a huge process, you file some paperwork, they do a search to see if it is stolen and or has a bank lien if it's clear you pay the money and get a title in your name.

If someone cares about their equipment, or the forest, they would not leave it laying there for 16 years. Would you argue?

I Tuurtley don't even care 1 місяць тому (змінено) My dad basically got a free bulldozer, he doesn’t outright own it but it’s basically in a place where to get it out would be extremely expensive and not worth it. So he fix it up and he let me learn how to use it via using it on a hill side and a dozen trees. Recently he bought an old tractor and fix it up real nice, so he can cut the grass on his property in upstate New York.
  • william davidson
